1. Obtain feedback from a representative group of people that the team memeber interacts with
- Where possible talk to peers and the people who have been the primary recipients of the service
- Seek evidence of an objective well executed and suggestions for improvement
2. Review each objective and assess performance, paying attention to both quantative and qualatative measures
- Review each objective and be clear where it was achieved and where it wasn't
- Assess the performance using unambiguous quantative maeasures where possible
- Reivew using qualitative measures too
- Try to steer the discussion in such a way that the end result is a desire to improve
3. Be clear on what could have been done differently or better
- Discuss the outcomes and how they were achieved
- Be clear on where improved performance is required and how
- Explain where the way the objective was achieved could be improved
- Agree the improvements required for the following period
4. Draft appraisal
- Write the appraisal in concise and clear language
- Keep it factual and avoid emotive language
- Keep it balanced, highlighting positives and areas for improvement
5. Review draft with team member particularly any sensitive points to ensure that the feedback is understood
- Go through each of the key points
- Praise the good performance
- Reiterate the desired changes for the future
- Agree any final refinements
6. Issue final version
- Issue the completed version
- File for future reference
