Handling someone leaving well is important for the person leaving and the rest of the team.

Leaver in a hurry
  • Forward copy of resignation letter to Human Resources
  • Check any expense related arrangements (e.g. stop using fuel card)
  • Consider trying to get them to change their mind
  • Agree last working day
  • Agree remaining holiday
  • Request leaver prepares handover plan
  • Review and approve handover plan
  • Arrange leaving card and collection
  • Prepare leaving presentation
  • Carry out exit interview
  • Collect security pass
  • Collect any other company property (e.g. laptop, mobile phone, fuel card, etc.)
  • Inform systems security manager(s) to remove all relevant access to systems

1. Resignation
  • Employee confirms resignation in writing
  • Forward copy of resignation letter to Human Resources

2. Consider trying to get them to change their mind
  • Sometimes it is desirable and possible to change someone's mind to leave
  • If desirable, discuss options for not leaving (e.g. more money, flexible working, etc.)

3. Key arrangements
  • Agree last working day with employee
  • Agree remaining holiday with employee and notify Human Resources
  • Human Resources arrange exit interview where applicable
  • Arrange leaving card and collection if appropriate
  • Ensure that a handover plan is compiled

4. Last week
  • Check that all handover activities are completed
  • Check that card has been signed by the appropriate group of people
  • Prepare leaving presentation

5. The last working day
  • Line manager performs leaving presentation and gift if appropriate
  • Collect security pass
  • Collect any other company property (e.g. laptop, mobile phone, fuel card, etc.)
  • Inform systems security manager(s) to remove all relevant access to systems
